For example, epilepsy is practically defined as the chance of having future recurrent seizures of at least 60%, though patients with epilepsy have seizures for a wide variety of reasons. Among these reasons are tumors, strokes, infections, metabolic derangements, cortical dysplasia, genetic mutations, head trauma, and many others. As a neurologist, it is critical to identify a patient's diagnosis to establish an empiric management plan, though neurologists are required in many cases to determine the underlying cause of a patient's diagnosis to determine the highest efficacy tailored treatments. Neurologists are detectives on a daily basis, and studying patients and being genuinely curious about their disease is a daily fascination.

As a neurologist, the most fascinating thing about this field is the incredible complexity of the brain and nervous system and how billions of neurons work together to control everything from movement and sensation to emotion and cognition. What is especially remarkable is the brain's ability to adapt, heal, and reorganize after injury or disease (neuroplasticity). This plasticity offers hope for stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, and even neurodegenerative disease management.

Another overarching interest is the difficulty of diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, of which many are poorly understood. Disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's demand expertise not just in the latest science but also in the humane treatment of patients. Every patient offers a new challenge, and finding a suitable treatment option can improve their quality of life immensely.
